PTS 7 is Pillow Talk Swap 7. I'm currently participating in another round. I really love this swap because there are some seriously talented people. Receiving a pillow from any of these peeps is 'A okay' with me.

A few weeks ago, I saw Rashida's quilt and was smitten! There was something similar to this in my partner's favorites, so I went for it. I drew up a quick block and Voila!

Here you go, partner!

It's paper pieced.

I used Kona Bone and I hand quilted all of it with floss.

I used some Nicey Jane for the back and some Bijoux to bind.

I added a label that came out a little too big. Sorry about that, Partner! : /

I really enjoyed making this for you, Partner. I looked through your photo's and almost fainted at some of your work.... I hope it's up to par with your high standards. I hope you find this pillow as lovely as I do.

I'll be posting the pattern I used soon!. It needs a bit of fine tuning, so I may need a litle help from a dear friend.

I'll be a little busy the next few weeks. I need to finish up a quilt that will be in the Glendale Quilt Show.

Anna Maria Horner in Los Angeles!!

She was here a couple weeks ago.... Can you believe it? Not only did I get to meet my favorite designer, but I also got to take a class with her. She taught a Multi Tasker Tote class and it was fantastic. I've always wanted to go to a Heather Ross weekend sewing workshop but could never get in! She has been a guest teacher on several occasions.

I used to sew a little in high school and stopped when I started college. I began sewing again after I had Taylor. I began to shop for fabric online and discovered designer fabric! I found this Chocolate Lolliop print and fell in love! I quickly realized that there was a coordinating collection and had to have it! This was the collection that got me hook, line and sinker! I now have a terrible fabric addiction....

After class, she hung out and spoke to our guild. She talked about how she got started. Showed some of her sketches, clothes and of course, quilts.

The funniest part is that she doesn't really consider herself a 'quilter'. Oh, she has a new line coming out in May called 'Field Study'. We got a sneak preview and it's amazing!

Well Anna, I enjoyed my class with you, loved hearing you speak about your career / life. I don't know how you do it with all those kids!!! You are truly an inspiration! Please come back to LA soon!

What i dislike? hmm.. once i mentioned that flowers make me sad because eventually they die to my husband, now i dont get flowers any more. I always get sad on valentines day because more than anything i want some flowers!! (i even tell him that, but he doesnt want me sad later)

Baby, Baby, Baby.....

Ugh! Babies are popping up everywhere! Last year, 4 of my friends had babies. That means I needed to make 4 quilts, but only made 1! Ooopps! I'm still going to make them, but they will just be late. Yes, I suck... :(

I found out earlier this year that 4 lovely ladies from my guild are pregnant too.... Gheez! I'm really going to try to be on the ball with these.... TRY....

The good news is that I managed to finish one last week. It's for baby Jonathan. I used some metro living circles and some geeks gone wild by Timesless Treasure. I didn't want to make it "too babyish" so these prints worked perfectly together.

These are all HST's arranged in a zig zag patttern. Finished quilts measures 40" x 40".

I quilted it with staright lines and made more lines on the ends.

I pieced a big space invader on the back, embroidered his name and added a label. :)

2 down, 6 more baby quilts to go.... GHEEZ! :P

I've new completed 2 quilts this year. Feels good! Thanks so much for letting me share another quilt.

Farmers Wife Sampler Quilt

And so it begins. Some friends and I decided to start our Farmers Wife Sampler Quilt Blocks finally. There's a group that we all joined that's already started last year. So they're on block #60 or something...

We set a goal of 4 blocks a month. There are 111 blocks in all. Crazy? I know. I decided to try this to get back to the basics. I haven't done many of them and they are definitely out of my comfort zone...I made these last night. I tried paper piecing for the first time and I love it! It wasn't bad at all.

The fabric I decided to use was my DS Quilts Daisy Mae. I finished 2 blocks. #1 Attic Windows & #3 Basketweave. I think my layout is backwards on the basketweave block, but that's what I get for sewing at midnight.... I can't wait to show you more.

A Busy 2011

2011 for me was a year full of happy sewing and quilting.

My goal was to make 6 quilts and I accomplished my mission! :)

Another New Quilt

So now that I finished my first big quilt. Taylor said that she wants me to make her a rainbow quilt. She says that she will use the 'Star one' for now. Gheez, what a demanding 6 year old.... Does she think that I can just make another queen size quilt in 3 weeks?!?! Yes, she does.... LOL! :)

So here I go again... I just finished pulling her fabrics.

Pattern? Yes, HST's arranged in a fun way....

The master has cracked the whip. Let the sewing begin.... :)

A Big Quilt

Happy New Year! I hope everyone's holidays were wonderful.

I'm so sorry I haven't blogged yet this year. I have a really good excuse. I've been working every night on my first big quilt. I started on December 19th and I hand stitched the last inch of binding on Sunday. That's exactly 3 weeks! Oh and get this.... I hand quilted it!!! That part definitely took the longest! (This Amish alter ego seems to take over alot. I think I should name her....Annie! Annie it is...)

So, here it is! :) These are white wonky stars arranged in a interlocking pattern.

Measurements are 90" x 90" (queen size).

All Hand Quilted...

Here's the back.

I did the reverse of what I did in the front.

The fabric used was DS Quilts Picnic & Fairgrounds and Kona White.

Both were purchased from Joann Fabrics.

My inspiration was this beautiful mini quilt by Faith.

I saw it while browsing through Fresh Modern Quilts.

If you ever need some inspiration, you can find some seriously amazing work there.

Merry Christmas!!!

Merry Christmas everyone! I hope you all got to spend some wonderful time with loved ones. We did! :)

I finished all my gifts on time this year. :) I even made a couple more last minute gifts. I made a couple scarves for my friend's daughters in Germany. I added some embroidery and backed it with some warm fuzzy fleece.

They will definitely come in handy.

I made one for Taylor too and she loves it.

Now, I want one for me. Must add that to my long list of stuff to make....

Some Holiday Decorating

I always make plans to make stuff for my home for the holidays. It never works out. But now, I am no longer a HOLIDAY SLACKER.

I finished a few things for the Holidays!

I'm proud to say that my christmas tree is no longer naked.

I came up with the pattern on my own. It's based on my Spiderweb block. Just tweaked a bit....

I hand quilted it and here's a closeup! :)

I'm also happy to say that I also made an Advent Calendar for my kids!

The pattern is based on Oh Fransson's Tutorial, but just tweaked a bit (again).

I did 25 pockets instead of 24.

I embroidered the numbers and I hand quilted it (again!) :)

Amanda's beautiful calendar was the 'kick in the pants' that I needed to finish this. Thanks, Amanda! :)

Taylor really loves it. She said, "Mama, I love your new calendar. It's so beautiful."

What can I say.... the kid has good taste.

Gotta go. More holidays gifts to sew...

Some Weekend Sewing

So we spent this past weekend in Vegas. We didn't fly, so it was a long drive. Especially when you have 2 small kiddos. To me, Road trip = Hand sewing! So here's what I worked on....

A new pillow for our bedroom.

These small squares were all English Paper Pieced. Yes, hand sewn! It's also hand quilted too. Lots of hand sewing on this puppy! Crazy, I know, but the end result is always great.

My husband was kinda bummed that I gave away this pillow. He didn't realize I made it for a swap. So this pillow has almost the same prints as the other one. Just a little different. Nonetheless, he approves.

Here it is playng nicely with my Habitat Pillows.

I also managed to hand quilt most of my Christmas Tree Skirt. I'll be showing that to you very soon!

Our Thanksgiving Weekend!

I hope you all had an amazing Thanksgiving! I hope I wasn't the only one who put on a few more pounds this weekend... To make mattters worse, we spent the rest of the weekend in Las Vegas!

Our generous friend Jae, hooked us up with an amazing room at the Palazzo. All I can say is WOW! What a beautiful place. We all had some more great food and a wonderful wonderful time!

Getting Ready for Thanksgiving

My husband, Howard and I got married back in September 2003. We bought a house in August 2004. That year we hosted Thanksgiving and now we host every year. I love cooking Thanksgiving food! It's one of the few times a year we get to indulge and just enjoy a great meal with family and friends.

My First Flannel Quilt

Happy Monday! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

As promised, I managed to sew this puppy up last night. I used AHM Folksy Flannel and a Valori Wells Sole print that I've had for years. This came togoether very quickly because I wanted to only use squares with no piecing.

Finished size will be 48" x 48". Just big enough for me and my kids to hide in. :)

As you can guess, this one is a 'keeper". The back should be done tonight. More photos to follow soon!

A New Quilt!

"My name is Jennifer Chon and I'm a certified fabric hoarder". Yes, I admit it. My stash is ridiculous! I cannot resist a good sale so my stash has grown exponentially through the last few years. Maybe I'll have the courage to show it to you one day. Maybe...

Anyway, I'm trying something new. I recently purchased some AMH Folksy Flannel from Fabric.com. (My supplier!). I've never made a quilt with flannel before so, I'm excited to start!

I already washed it, pressed it and even cut it!

Chocolate Chip Cookie Brownies

I finally got around to making Chocolate Chip Cookie Brownies. These are my 2 absolute favorite desserts in the whole wide world. Why, you ask? Because you don't need utensils to eat either of these. You pick it up, take a big bite and then it makes you happy! Seriously!!

My daughter, Taylor celebrated her 6th birthday last Monday. She was absent from school that day. I'll explain why in a future post.

I didn't make cupcakes this year for her class. I ended up making these and they were definitely a hit with the kids. I did half semi sweet chips and half white chocolate chips. So they were perfect in every way!

Did I make you hungry?!?! Did I plant a seed in your head? Go make some!

LAMQG Habitat Challenge!

My guild hosted another challenge. We got 8 Fat Eights of Jay McCarroll's line Habitat. We were told not to take any if we did not plan on using them. I never turn down a chance to work with free fabric! :) So here's what I came up with... 3 Pillows! My goal was to use every last piece and I did! The solid print that I used in every pillow is Kona Coal. My new favortite! :)

Pillow #1 are HST's (Half Square Triangles). I made it so I could get more comfortable with doing them. I'm still not crazy about HSTs but I'm even more not crazy about the free motion quilting I used here. I really hate how it looks and that's because it's my first time with it. I need more practice....

Pillow #2 was inspired by Denyse Schmidt's Hop, Skip & Jump pattern. I've been wanting to make a quilt out of that pattern so I thought this would be a great test drive. I love this pattern alot! The pebble quilting was cool too, but some parts are an absolute abomination. Again, I need more practice.....

Pillow #3 is my favorite! It's a Spiderweb Block - My Way. Tutorial is coming so you guys can make one too. Aren't they fun?!?! I wanted to echo the web, so I thought hand quilting it would really make it pop! I think it did the trick. :)

So here they are all happy together!

These are definitely a great addition to my couch! :)

Overall, I think pillows are great because they are so quick to put together. It's a great way to test out a quilt pattern that you might be on the fence about.

Now, go forth and make some pillows!

Spiderwebs... My way

I love Spiderwebs blocks. They're use up a tons of scraps and the end result is always stunning.

I couldn't find any patterns on-line, so I made my own.

NO More Naked Tree

I know it's early Novmber, but Christmas ALWAYS seems to creep up on me. Shortly after Halloween, we celebrate my birthday, my daughter's birthday & then Thanksgiving.

This year, I'd like to have my home decorated on black Friday. It's a new goal of mine!

Hopefully, I can turn it into a tradition.

So a couple weeks ago, I cut up some red and green strips.....

And turned it into this!!!

It's ready to be quilted!

Can you tell, I'm excited about decorating my home this year?!?!

Chair Makeover!

I had a very busy morning. I finally got off my butt and gave my dining room chair a makeover!

I bought these chairs when I boughy my first condo in 1998! (Yes, I'm that old!) This not the original upholstry. It was an awful plaid before I changed it to this. Unfortuanately, I don't have a photo to show you because I didn't have a digital camera back then....LOL! :)

My kids have managed to messed these up pretty bad...

Plus, I've been wanting to change these for awhile now.

So, 30 minutes and several staples later...

Voila!

Much better! It makes me smile whenever I look at it!

1 down 5 more to go!

Ill do a quick tutorial in a couple weeks! :)

Experimenting...

I don't know what my problem is.... I cannot make a plain quilt back! I just don't have it in me. I really love experimenting with new designs when I make quilt backs. If it turns out good, "Yippee!" If it doesn't then, "Oh well, it's the back..."

So here is it!

This is going to be part of the back for a String Quilt I've benn working on. This experiment was a success. I'm definitely going to make another one like this! :)

Embroidery 101

On Saturday, I got the chance to take an Embroidery class at Lauren's shop, Sew Modern with these lovely ladies!

Just in case you don't recognize them, they are Cath & Kirsten aka Prints Charming!
Yes! All the way from Australia! :)

Check out all the loveliness they brought to inspire us.
(There is some serious needlework going on over here!)

I don't know how to embroider. I've always wanted to learn so I was very excited to get started! :)

Class started and we got our choice of either one of these.

I went with this one because I always use white, and I wanted to try something different.
Look! They even provided a little booklet (like CliffNotes!)
Super Cute, huh?

I learned a bunch of new stitches: blanket, daisy chains, couching and how to hide knots too!

This is what I came up with at the end of class.

Ok! Ok! This is one of theirs...

Before we knew it, class was over and it was time to say good bye to this dynamic duo.

If you ever have the opportunity to take one of these classes, I highly recommend it!

The Pillow Talk { Swap } - Round 6

3 posts in one month!!! What?!?! I know... I'm really trying to be better about not neglecting you, Miss Blog!

Anyway, I decided to participate in The Pillow Talk { Swap } - Round 6. I've been waiting to participate since I joined the group in January. There are so many talented folks in this swap. So getting a pillow from any of these peeps is a real treat.

It was fun stalking my partner! I decided to keep the keep my color palette limited to grey, greens, blues & yellows.

I found some real beauties in my scrap bin!
So here's what I came up with....
I added a small Kona Coal border and I used some Black Authentic to bind.

I was going to machine quilt this, but my Amish alter ego took over..... I hand quilted it! :)

More Kona Coal with a zipper in the back! This was my first time putting a zipper on a pillow! I'm so glad I didn't screw it up... :)

I added a little label. I hope my partner doesn't mind...

So that's it! All done! I enjoyed making this for you Partner!

Los Angeles Modern Quilt Guild - 2nd Anniversary

I can't believe this guild had been around for 2 years now! Latifah and Alissa just decided to gather a few quilters and start meeting up. How cool is that!!! There are now over 200 modern guilds all over the world. That just blows my mind!

In celebrating the anniversary, we always have an annual swap. Each participant has to bring in a bag of scraps and your partner can only use one print from their stash. I participated last year and it was so fun that I decided to do it again this year.

I got Rhonda. She eats lunch at her desk everyday so she asked for something that would show others that she's "at lunch". Her exact words were "something to show that I'm having lunch, so back off, YO! So, here's what I made for her.

A placemat, a mug rug and a hair pin for her daughter.

Kaffe Fassett in LA

In my opinion, you can't be a quilter and not know who Kaffe Fassett is. A few months ago, I was shopping at one of my favorite LQS's, Momen+ and I saw this.

I love color and have always been a fan of Kaffe Fassett's work. He showed us much of his work (early and current) and his inspiration for his designs. It was so interesting to find out that he hand stitches everything and hate to use a sewing machine. He showed us pictures of his design studio and artwork. I found his pictures to be full of color and so lively. He is a wonderful artist, desginer and a bad ass knitter!

At the end of his talk, he signed my book. I was truly inspired....

Denyse Schmidt Workshop

I was lucky enough to take a beginner's improv class with Denyse Schmidt. When my guild asked if there was any interest in taking a class with Denyse, I thought I was going to faint... I asked my husband if we could take a family trip to the east coast so I could take one of Denyse's classes. He said yes. Now, we don't need to take that trip. We still might though...

Anyway, back to the workshop.... First of all, Denyse is every bit as awesome and nice as she seems. She's very laid back and such a great teacher. I thought I knew how to make an improv quilt. I was wondering what I would gain from this class. Boy, did I learn alot! Using what I have, curves, but the biggest lesson I learned was to "LET GO". It was so 'freeing' once I did so.

Here are the first 2 blocks I made only using the fabric that Denyse provided. Notice the natural curves? That because I didn't use my ruler. That was pretty cool too!

Here are the other blocks I made using fabric that I brought. It's the KJR green posies. On the bottom left block, I used the wrong side of the fabric by accident. Denyse saw what I did and said, "Just go with it". I was like "REALLY?!?!?" So I did and I'm happy to say that I love that block.

I made 2 more blocks a few weeks ago.

I decided to to turn these blocks into a wall hanging / art quilt that I'll hang in my sewing space.

It will go nicely with this photo.

Denyse Schmidt in Los Angeles

I'm a fabric junkie. There! I said it! I love designer fabric and one of my favorite designers is Denyse Schmidt. I was lucky enough to meet her and take one of her workshops a couple months ago. My guild flew her in for a weekend in late June.

One night, she did an artist talk. She talked about everything from how she started, her partnerships, fabric lines and her inspiration. She even showed us her sketchbook! That was fun to look at!

She has a new book coming out in April, so she read us a page from that.

She did a Q & A.

She also showed us photos from her new lines that are available through Joann's. Sugar Creek will be released in late August and Daisy Mae is coming in November.

Overall, the talk was so inspirational. I like her even more if that's at all possible.

A Serious Quilt Label

Last December, I decided that I would start a bee and be a Bee Mama. I decided to get these made for the girls in my group.

Quilting for a Cause

I went to my high school reunion last year and had a blast re-connecting with all my IHHS sisters. It turns out some of them had gone through some rough times. We found out a few of them were cancer survivors. It seemed like it really hit home to all of us.

Some of my classmates will be participating in the Revlon Run / Walk LA 2011. I really wanted to participate, but it's the weekend of my little man's birthday. He's turning 3! I wanted to find a way to help. So, I decided to do what I do best. Quilt! I wanted to make a quilt and raffle it off and donate the proceeds to this walk.

I asked some of my Bee Mates to make me some blocks and they did. It's finally done and I really love how it came out! It measures roughly 47" x 47". Its going to be so hard to give away...

You know you're a fabric addict when you look for fabric when you're not even at a fabric store. I was shopping at Marshalls for a Yoga mat. (Yes, I'm going to start again! Details in a different future post....)

I started giggling until I realized that I'm Henna Garden deficient. So if anyone is reading this: I still need Red, Spring & Raspberry.

Charity Bees - Februay Blocks

I joined 2 charity bees this year. I figured, I have a fabric addiction, maybe I can do some good with it, right?

The first one is run by the Peg & Becca at Sew Fresh Fabrics. As a shop, they end up with so many remnants and scraps, so they decided to make quilts for charities. They sent us all a lovely scrap bag (There's 16 of us!) We need to make 1 block, and we get to keep the rest. Isn't that cool?!? We will be making a quilts for Project Linus this round.

This is what I came up with. It was inspired by this. I hope you like it Peg & Becca!

The other one is Do. Good Stitches. It's run by Rachael. There are now 6 circles in her group. I'm part of the Comfort circle. Remember this block? It was for this bee.

There are stitchers and quilters. I originally signed up as a stitcher, but was asked to be a quilter. It's really hard for me to say no to charity, so I'm a quilter.

Here is my February Block for Jill.

She asked us to use orange and grey to make Map of the States Blocks. It was time consuming cutting everything, but I'm very pleased with the end result. I hope you like it, Jill.

Call me a cheater...

That's right. I admit it. I'm cheating!

I decided to make my niece a quilt for her birthday. It's Feb. 7th and she lives in Texas. That means I'm running out of TIME! and that's why I'm cheating....

I'm going to use this beauty of a panel. It's Fairy Tip Toes by Tina Givens. I bought this because I thought it was a steal for $2.49! Yes, $2.49! :) The best part is that I'm going to actually use it. Unlike all the other stuff I get that ends up just sitting in my fabric box. (I would totally show you my stash, but it's really embarrassing. One of you might call "hoarders" on me...)

So here's the panel. Cute, isn't it?!?!

I was going use this for binding, but realized that it too would make a great quilt for a little girl. So be it.

Overall, I do feel bad for not doing the piecing and all, but I promise to make it a stunner.

Let me back up here...

In my last post, I posted some blocks.... I didn't realize that I never told you about all the bees I joined. So, here goes...

The first one I joined was Scrap-bee Block. 1 block per month and we use our own stash to make other members blocks. I made the donkey block for this bee.

I also joined [3 x 6] Sampler Quilt Mini Bee. There are several hives in this group and 7 members per hive. Hive members choose their colors, but you get to choose what kind of block you want to make for them. The same block is made for the other 6 members in your hive using the colors they request. The beauty of this is that it only last 3 months. 3 months to complete 6 blocks seems easy enough to manage.

I wanted to be in a bee with my guild members. So, I started Seams Perfect: A Modern Scrap Bee. 7 of us are from the guild and the rest of the group are great girls I found on Flickr. 2 Blocks per month and members use their own stash to make blocks for others. I did give them the option to send out fabric if they wanted. No one wanted to go first, so I did.

These are the blocks I made. I used this tutorial from Ashley at Film in the Fridge. Aren't they lovely? I can't wait to see how the whole quilt will look like. Oh, and did I mention that I'm the Bee Mama?

I have more bees-nees to write about, but I will continue with that sometime soon. Stay tuned. :)

January Bee Blocks

Check out some of my recent bees-ness...

Scrap-Bee Block

Dustin asked us at Scrap-Bee Block to make him this donkey block. These were 1.5" squares and HST's. A total of 195.... Eeek! These were no fun cutting, but I loved the end result.

Do. Good Stitches block.

Jenn asked us to make Crazy 9 patch blocks in brown and olive green colors. I love how these came out and they were really easy to make. I used this tutorial from Elizabeth Hartman at Oh, Fransson!

Overall, these were both fun to make. I'm not feeling too overwhelmed, but I'm sure I will.

Sherbet Pips

I love this new line by the fabulous Aneela Hoey. Her debut line "Sherbet Pips" from Moda makes me "Giddy with Delight"! I have never been so 'smitten'!

I never bought a jelly roll and opened it right AWAY!

So, I'm pretty much telling you that "I like it". ALOT!

So here's a sneek peek of what I'm making with it. It going to be my daughter, Taylor's quilt. It's going to be queen size.

My Flickr addiction!

A few months ago I discovered Flickr. I'm not new to Flickr, but I'm new to the quilting groups. I never knew there were so many groups! It's great because you can get so much inspiration from everyone's photos. There are some seriously talented peeps! Ladies in my guild included, of course!

I've been sewing for a few years now, but only recently started quilting. After I got the hang of it, I wanted to join a quilting bee. So I did! Again, again, again, again.... You get the picture? I think I may have bit off more than I can chew. :\

I'll be sure to go into more detail in the coming months. Just know that I'll be showing you alot of blocks every month. I hope that's okay.

New Year's Resolution

Okay, I decided to make some New Year's Resolutions. You know the typical ones: lose some weight, exercise more often, eat better AND worst of all, no more 'Buying Fabric'.

How long did the fabric thing last? 9 days. A whole 9 days..(I'm so embarrassed....)

Why commit to something I cannot do? Lesson learned!

At out last Guild meeting earlier this month, Latifah and Alyssa got all of us kona charm packs for a mini challenge. We have to make a small quilt with one solid and one solid for binding. Im a little excited about this challenge because Ive always wanted to do something with solids! Now I get to really play! Now sure what to do right now... Still need to think about it.

Oh, and kudos to Robert Kaufman for their generosity. They are providing all the modern quilt guilds with these. How awesome is that?!?

I always have to host Thanksgiving at our place. A week before Thanksgiving, I decided to make this table runner. I used Denyse Schmidt's Home Dec Line: County Fair.

With limited time, I didn't want to spend too much time cutting so I did some wonky squares.

I wasn't too sure about how it would look. But the end result was great.
